Carretera Austral

The Carretera Austral is one of the most breathtaking roads in Chilean Patagonia, tracing the route between Puerto Montt and Villa O'Higgins. Traveling it is a true adventure, combining stretches of road with catamaran crossings, and some even venture to explore it by bicycle. The northern section runs from Puerto Montt to Coyhaique, while the southern section extends to Villa O'Higgins. No one area is more beautiful than another, as each boasts parks, lakes, rivers, and wildlife of indescribable beauty, as well as a selection of high-end hotels. When to go: between October and April, for good weather and longer, sunnier days. In winter, the weather may force the closure of roads and tourist attractions. How to get there: the Carretera Austral begins south of Puerto Montt, so this city can be a good starting point if the plan is to travel the entire route. However, if the plan is only to visit the southern section of the Carretera Austral, Balmaceda is the gateway. What to see on the Northern Carretera Austral: Pumalín National Park, Puyuhuapi Hot Springs, Queulat National Park, Futaleufú, and the Río Simpson National Reserve. What to see on the Southern Carretera Austral: Cerro Castillo National Park, the Marble Caves on General Carrera Lake, Exploradores Glacier, the confluence of the Baker and Neff Rivers, Tortel Cove, and Villa O'Higgins.
